It's all in the timing!
So, you are looking to launch your own tutoring business next academic year. Perhaps you are currently teaching and want to see out your contract with your current pupils, or just think that September is a good time of year to open an education business? Well – you are sort of right! You can open a tutoring business any time of year – and in fact, opening in the Summer can be a great option – get your feet under the table, get any initial niggles ironed out, start to build a good reputation – and you are ready to make the most of the Autumn rush! But, have you thought how much time it takes to get everything in place?
THE TIMELINE FOR LAUNCHING YOUR TUTORING BUSINESS
Of course, starting any business takes planning and preparation and buying a franchise from MagiKats takes care of quite a bit of that for you, but finding a venue, staff etc. can still take a while. Let’s work backwards from an opening date of September 1st.
MagiKats training is conducted through a mix of self-paced learning, online training sessions, with a three day, face-to-face session at MagiKats HQ in Farnham (Surrey). This final part of initial training should be completed two to three weeks prior to the planned opening date, so everything is fresh in your mind – so that’s early to mid August. The phase of training has to be completed before you start promoting your workshops – and it typically takes 4-6 weeks to get the first enquiries ready to sign on the dotted line. That puts the completion date of early July.
Before any face to face training can take place, however, you need to have all the business planning done. That includes finding a venue, getting a phone number, business bank account, business registration – all of which can take anything from two weeks to two months. All in all, we usually expect this stage of the process to take around a month – so that’s early June.
None of the above can start until you (and we) have decided that a franchise with us is right for you – you need to come to an online Information session, do your business plan and application, work with us on choosing a suitable territory – none of which you want to rush. How long do you think you would want to take to make a decision that will change your life for at least the next five years?
WORRIED IT’S TOO LATE?
This timeline can be truncated if someone has plenty of time to invest, or can also be extended if someone wants to take things at a more gentle pace. Remember also, that there is never really a good or bad time of year to open - so if you’ve left things a bit late for September then don’t worry! We train new Principals throughout the year. What is most important is that you do your research and act when the time is right for you.
