Do you really want to go back to the office?
So, the government is no longer asking us to work from home, and we can now all head back to the office. Hurrah, great news!
Or is it?
How do you feel about going back to the office? Dreading the long commute? Got kind of used to working in your own space and on your terms? Not thrilled about having to go back to the office bull pit and face the office politics battering ram?
In typical Daily Mail style, at the beginning of January, the newspaper reported on a Reddit conversation where people were exchanging a variety of reasons for not wanting to go back to the office. The list was diverse including dreading having to get dressed to meet demanding commercial deadlines, not enjoying poor leadership and a general dislike of colleagues. In fact, some just admitted that they’ve lost their drive and passion for their job or career since working from home.
It's no surprise
Only when we look back on the pandemic 30 years from now, will we perhaps gain a full perspective of exactly what we’ve been through during the course of the last 2 years. From the fear of the first few months, the grief for many and lengthy periods isolation and sacrifices, to spending much more time at home, or walking in the countryside and a complete transformation of tradition lifestyles. It’s been quite an ordeal.
We’ve learnt new habits (would you have dreamt even two years ago that you’d be regularly wearing a mask), queued for food amidst empty shelves, mastered new technology so that even Granny knows how to Zoom now, almost learnt a new language and come to understand much more about the behaviour of a virus than most of us ever probably wanted to know.
In short, it would probably be a surprise if we all just went back to the way things were because we are not necessarily the same people we were this time two years ago. And for some of us, that may just be a good thing.
Working from home has its advantages
In an ONS survey released last summer, there were some perhaps unsurprising revelations about working from home. Those who took part in the survey cited the main advantages of working from home as:
An improvement to work life balance
A reduction in time spent completing work
Improved wellbeing
Whilst the main disadvantages of working from home were cited as:
Fewer job opportunities
Harder to work with others
