We begin our bounceback with a new centre in Peterborough!
After the stress of 2021 so far, we are delighted to announce that our first new centre to open is in Peterborough! The MagiKats Peterborough North centre will be run by experienced teacher Catherine Gourlay and is accepting student enrolments now. Catherine already plans to open a second centre in Peterborough South in the future, and also has plans for a third centre in due course.
MagiKats offers out-of-school tutoring in reasoning, maths and English, for any child from pre-school to GCSE. Weekly, interactive workshops help children and teenagers improve their subject skills and study skills. The workshops support the school curriculum and provide a core skills development programme. With study skills, thinking skills and problem-solving skills included at every level, the effect of the MagiKats programmes spreads across all subjects. Each child is also provided with a different programme to follow, meaning the work is tailored specifically to the individual.
The MagiKats programme also works on developing the child’s confidence and giving them positive learning experiences which they may not always get in school. They can work in small groups which is often less intimidating than a full class. Quite often students find it easier to ask for help or give answers in a small group situation as there is no peer pressure or expectation. Making mistakes is celebrated to remove the fear factor. This creates a learning opportunity for the individual and a chance for progress to be made.
Catherine Gourlay has been teaching mathematics in secondary schools for 32 years. She has taught in many of Peterborough’s schools and academies, and she has also taught in a local independent school and college.
Catherine explains more about what attracted her to MagiKats and her hopes for the centre and the children of Peterborough:
“When I decided I wanted to run a tuition centre, I did a huge amount of research. I love the fact that MagiKats is a family run business. They have an expanding network of fellow franchisees and the highest quality teaching resources. The materials and methods of delivery are unique and there was certainly a gap in the market I am delighted to fill. The benefits of being a MagiKats principal are not having to start from scratch or try to reinvent the wheel. Everything has been developed, tried, and tested. There is always someone on the end of a phone or email who can give you answers or make suggestions.
I have spent my working life to date teaching mathematics. I value education and I am committed to helping the children of Peterborough. I know from personal experience that having some qualifications can open doors and lead to opportunities you may not expect. I am determined to give the children of Peterborough a positive education experience that builds their confidence. Every child deserves the chance to be successful and to achieve this at their own pace with whatever support they need. I want our children to become confident individuals who enjoy learning and achieving. I want them to thrive and reach their goals. My aim is to offer an educational experience the children will enjoy, so that they love coming to MagiKats and have fun doing activities they have not tried before. I want to offer them a chance to develop trusting relationships with their mentors and feel like they really matter. I want to get the best out of them!”
Catherine has lived in the Peterborough area for over 20 years. She is married with a daughter who is taking her GCSEs. She is also an active volunteer with Girl Guiding running weekly meetings and giving the girls new and exciting opportunities and experiences.
